In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, the devastation in Puerto Rico crippled communication in and out of the island. Whether it is emergency traffic or health and welfare, accurate communication is key. Warren County Technical School students and members of the 721st Mechanized Contest Battalion Amateur radio Club, Abbie, KD2PUA and Tucker, KD2JPM, realized nothing beats the speed and accuracy of "text messages". Their project: "An Emergency Solar powered Digi-peater" is a portable, self-sustaining, packet radio digi-peater that can be rapidly deployed to provide basic data communications when traditional communication systems are inoperable.

The system is composed of:

  • RaspberryPi with TNC-PI
  • 2 Meter Handi-Talkie
  • Voltage Regulators
  • Charge Control
  • Batteries (2x 6V 4.5AH SLA Battery)
  • Solar Panels (12x ALLPOWERS 2.5W 5V/500mAh Mini Encapsulated Solar Cell 130x130 mm)
  • Antenna
  • Portable / Transportable Enclosure (4' PVC)
  • 3D Printed Solar panel brackets
